That depends on where you are driving, according to a recent University of Illinois study. The study found that cell phone bans were successful and could decrease the number of accidents in urban areas long term. However, cell phone bans were also associated with higher than expected accident rates in rural areas.
The University of Illinois study looked at Pennsylvania, which currently does not have a statewide cell phone and driving ban, and New York, which was the first state to impose such a ban. The states provided a useful comparison because of their similar demographics and weather. The researchers considered seven years’ worth of data from both states and found that a state wide cell phone ban that imposes the same limitations on all drivers in all parts of these diverse states may not be the best approach to keep motorists safe.
What do you think? Do you think the study provides support for those who oppose a statewide cell phone while driving ban in Pennsylvania? Please leave a comment and let our injury accident attorneys know your thoughts.
